These projects change the paradigm of the wastewater treatment plant as a major consumer of energy and generator of energy waste, to a source of reusable water and producer of high value resources. The current scarcity of water and the growing difficulties in treating waste have led Aqualia, the manager of the Almeria Municipal Water Service, to focus a large part of its R&D efforts on finding innovative solutions to ad- dress these problems. An example of this is the recent in- auguration of two new projects be- ing developed at the El Toyo was- tewater treatment plant (WWTP). These are the Incover project and the Biosol project, both of which use wastewater as a “raw material”. This inauguration was attended by the mayor of the city, Ramon Fernan- dez-Pacheco, along with Councillor for Municipal Services, Juan Jose Alonso. The mayor commented that “Almeria is at the forefront of effi- ciency in water management and these two R & D projects do nothing but add in this sense and bring us closer to sustainable management of this resource and thereby close the line of the circular economy. The main objective of both projects, which complement each other, is Two R&D projects revolutionise wastewater treatment in El Toyo (Almería) Zouhayr Arbib, Enrique Lara and Raúl Cano , Aqualia’s researchers leading the project. Presentation of the Incover and Biosol project, which was attended by the mayor of the city, Ramón Fernández-Pacheco, together with the Councilor for Municipal Services, Juan José Alonso.
