FCC Environment will invest €12 million to upgrade the machinery used at the El Campello plant with the purpose of increasing the recycled waste volumes

The purpose is to equip the facility with state-of-the-art equipment and technological innovation, as required to tackle the problem of bad odours and comply with EU regulations.

FCC Medio Ambiente (the Spanish brand of FCC Environment) will invest close to €12 million to upgrade the machinery of the El Campello waste treatment plant. The purpose is to equip the facility with state-of-the-art equipment, as required to increase the volume of waste recycled. FCC has managed this facility since April 2009, which provides its services to 52 municipalities of Marina Alta, Marina Baixa and El Campello.

The upgrades affect the mobile equipment of the plant and part of the fixed equipment, and is complementary to the investment approved by the Consorci Mare last December, as part of the modifications of the Management Project that will optimise the operation of the plant and reduce the volume of rejects to be landfilled.

The company will invest in both mobile and fixed equipment. In fact, it shall renew the container-carrying lorries, loader shovels, large volume material and vegetable waste shredders, a biostabilised product turning machine and several containers with a 10 cubic metre capacity.

Regarding the fixed equipment in the waste pre-treatment section, it shall upgrade the screening sieves, by-product and rejected material balers, bottle-collecting units, optical sorters, bag openers and conveyor belts, besides installing a unit for shrinkwrapping of reject bales. In addition, the organic material biomethanisation equipment and compost refining equipment will be renovated.

In addition to this investment, the general meeting of the Consorci Mare signed off last December on the initial approval for the modification of the Management Project, which will make it possible to achieve the objectives set forth by the EU in relation to waste management, as well as to tackle the problem of the bad odours affecting the plant since its inception. This modification of the Management Project will require an investment worth €18 million, which will be paid by the Consortium and FCC, the company operating the complex.

Once the necessary works have been completed, the facilities will meet the new legal requirements and will have a biological treatment plant with sufficient capacity for the treatment of organic material, selective organic material and green waste.
